Rotary Names Students of the Month at North Plainfield High School

Pictured left to right:  The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield’s Students of the Month Amber Henderson (February) and Lindsay Miller (March) with their certificates at the April 2, 2008 luncheon in their honor at Giovanna’s Restaurant.

The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield presented the Student of the Month Awards to two students from North Plainfield High School at a luncheon in their honor on December 5th at Giovanna’s Restaurant in Plainfield.

“We present these awards throughout the school year,” said Linda Persichino, president of the Rotary Club.  “It is such a pleasure to hear about the students’ accomplishments and how well they are doing in their studies and in school activities.”

NHPS choral music teacher and Interact Club advisor Amy Six introduced the students to the Club members and summarized the students’ achievements and activities.

Lindsay Miller, a senior at North Plainfield High School, is the March 2008 Student of the Month. Lindsay has been involved in the school's Interact Club for the past three years. She has been a part of many club activities, including working at the Rotary Track and Field Meet, selling food at Rutgers games, helping with the Interact Clothing drive, and facilitating penny drives and many other activities. Lindsay has also been involved in many other school activities  She has been a member of the school’s choir for four years, and a member of her church choir from elementary through high school.  She has also taken part in the Marching Band Color Guard for the past two seasons.  Lindsay is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the school’s yearbook.  Outside of school, Lindsay volunteers 10 hours a week as a kindergarten aide at Stony Brook School.

“I am honored to be chosen as the Student of the Month for March,” said Lindsay.  “Receiving this award values me for my hard work and effort throughout my high school years.”

Amber Henderson, the February 2008 Student of the Month, is a newer member of the Interact Club and a freshman at North Plainfield High School.  Since elementary school, Amber has been been involved in school and community related activities.  She participates in many extracurricular activities, such as the all of the high school instrumental ensembles, Marching Band, Interact Club, Winter Guard Crew and the drama crew. Amber also plays on the JV softball team, specializing as catcher and left fielder.

“Going into Interact I didn't know what to expect, but I had a feeling that it had something to do with helping people out and that's what I enjoy doing,” said Amber. ”Someone once told me that opening your heart and helping others could possibly turn out to stress and hurt you, but in the end it would be the most rewarding thing you would do. That's what I live by today. I am glad that I could be a part of Interact and am very pleased to be chosen student of the month for February.”

In addition to these two students, the Rotary Club also presented a Student of the Month Award to Antoine Terrell Porter, a junior at North Plainfield High School. Antoine has been an active member of the Interact Club since his freshman year. He is also involved in the Drama Club and all of the choruses at NPHS. Upon graduating, Antoine would like to pursue a career in the culinary arts. He has been involved in almost every project that the Interact Club has been a part of and looks forward to continuing his service.  Antoine was unable to attend the luncheon because he was taking an algebra test.

Rotary Names Students of the Month at North Plainfield High School

Pictured left to right:  The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield’s Students of the Month Katie Fellin (November), Tracy Mamuric (October), and Sara Merendino (December), with their certificates at the December 5 luncheon in their honor at Giovanna’s Restaurant.

The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield presented the Student of the Month Awards for three months to students from North Plainfield High School at a luncheon in their honor on December 5th at Giovanna’s Restaurant in Plainfield.

“Tracy Mamuric, the October Student of the Month, is the Interact Club president and a senior at NPHS.  She is a four year member of the Interact Club, and is an extremely involved member who recently attended the Rotary-Interact Leadership Training Workshop in Somerset. When Tracy is not doing Interact-related things, she can be found serving the class of 2008 as treasurer, running Spanish Honor Society as co-President, helping another student as a Canuck Mentor or doing a number of other things. Tracy is a four year member of all the high school’s choirs and serves as soprano section leader. In addition she is co-captain of both the fall color guard and winter color guard. Tracy loves to run the Interact Club meetings and wants nothing more than to make the club all it can possibly be at NPHS. Tracy, who aspires to be a nurse, is truly one who puts “Service Above Self”.”

Katie Fellin, a freshman at NPHS, is the November Student of the Month. Katie is very active in the music department. She is a member of all the choirs, the concert band and the jazz band. Katie is a first year member of the marching band color guard and a two-year member of the winter guard. Katie also enjoys being part of the school's drama club. Outside of school Katie is a cadet in her Girls Scout troop and is an accomplished former horseback rider who has competed in five horse shows. Katie has jumped into Interact, becoming very involved in organizing projects and volunteering her time. Although only a freshman, Katie is one of the chairpersons for the Winter Clothing Drive.

Sara Merendino is our Student of the Month for December. Sara is a freshman at NPHS but has already gone out of her way to become a very active Interactor. She is involved in the marching band, color guard, winter guard and jazz band. Sara plays clarinet in concert band and sings in the Vocal Workshop at NPHS. Sara too is a horseback rider and has competed in shows. Before getting involved with Interact, she was a volunteer at a nursing home. Sara's willingness to get involved is evidenced by her being the co-chair of the Interact Club's Winter Clothing Drive.

Wine Tasting Dinner

Over 80 Rotarians and their guests enjoyed fine food and wine at the Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield’s Ninth Annual Wine Tasting Dinner at Giovanna’s Restaurant in Plainfield on November 7 this year.

“The dinner is one of two primary fundraisers for our scholarship program,” said Linda Persichino, president of the local club.  “With silent auction items available during the early part of the dinner, our guests enjoyed the opportunity to bid on gift certificates to local merchants, gift baskets, and other fine selections.”

Rotarians and their friends tasted fine wines supplied by Wine Country, located on Route 22 in North Plainfield.  “This is the fifth year that Wine Country has helped us offer the event, and we were extremely happy with their wine selections,” said Ms. Pershino.  “The favorites were the Little Matteo Rosso Toscana, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, and the Mas de Bazan Crianza, a red with a combination of grapes that gives great freshness and balance.”

“Giovanna’s food was exceptional, with the flounder Florentine getting rave reviews.  The staff was helpful, courteous, and really helped everyone have a great time, making the evening a resounding success.”

Proceeds from the dinner will help fund the club’s scholarship program for Plainfield High School and North Plainfield High School.  For a number of years, the Rotary Club has awarded between $2,000 and $3,000 to graduating seniors at each of the two schools.

The event, chaired by club member Bill Parenti, was a success due in part to the combination of fine wines, great food, and friendly but competitive bidding on the Silent Auction items.  Bob Popola of Berkeley Heights, who effectively worked the bid list to win the VIP Honda auto detailing gift certificate, saw the value in the certificate and in the cause that he supported.  “My wife Terry and I come to this event every year,” said Mr. Popola.  “We enjoy getting together with our friends, relaxing, and supporting the Rotary Club.  Getting my car detailed just makes it all the better.”

The local Rotary club’s members include business and professional women and men from Plainfield, North Plainfield, and the surrounding area.  Membership in Rotary is by invitation, and is open to those who seek opportunities to be of service to the local and to the international community.
