DICTIONARY PROJECT

The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield will distribute dictionaries to every third grade student in Plainfield and in North Plainfield.  This will be the fourth year of the project, which has already seen 2,560 books distributed at a cost of $5,290.

We have ordered just over 900 dictionaries, and our committee chairmen (Dave Hollod for North Plainfield (dhollod@nplainfield.org) and Tom Reedy (treedy@unitedfamily.org) for Plainfield) are working on dates for distribution.  Club members and friends will personally give a dictionary to each student, with a smile and a handshake!

You can help on this project in one of several ways -

     1.  A contribution toward the cost - we'll pay just over $1,900 for the dictionaries.  While we are applying for grants to help off-set the cost, we don't know how much if any money they will generate.  The English dictionaries cost $1.50, and the Spanish/English cost $2.00.  If you choose to donate, make your check payable to Rotary PNP, Inc., our tax exempt 501(c)(3) corporation, and mail it to RotaryPNP, Inc., c/o 165 Palmer Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ  07080.  Your contribution is tax deductible pursuant to IRS regulations.

     2.  After we receive the dictionaries, we'll have a labeling party.  Each book gets a label inside that tells who gave them their presents and with a space for the child's name.  Labeling over 900 books takes a few hours (less time with more people), so that's an easy way to pitch in.  This will take place late August or early September.  Contact Tom Reedy to let him know you can help with the labeling.

     3.  Once we have the dates arranged, we like to set up teams of two people to go to the schools, preferably with each team handling one or two schools, three at most.  In North Plainfield, there are three schools, and in Plainfield there are 10, plus three or four charter schools.  Again, an easy way to help - spend a couple of hours making third graders happy in two or three classrooms.  Distributions will probably be in September.  Contact either Dave or Tom (emails above) if you can help in either or both communities.

As always, the Club thanks everyone for your support of this and other service projects.
