Our 2006-2007 fundraising season at Rutgers basketball games began with a fine effort by everyone who helped out at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on November 21.

Despite a fairly low turnout of fans, the Club managed to earn $801 for the evening’s work.

Tthirteen Club members and eleven friends and family pitched in for the first of our three basketball concession stand fundraisers.

This game was a good warm-up for the two remaining games, since both of those will be (or  already are) sell-outs.

Club fundraisers help us pay for scholarships to Plainfield and North Plainfield High School seniors.

Thanks to the efforts of Tom Reedy, the Club offered a hot meal to shelter residents at the YMCA in Plainfield.

Cooking baked ziti, Trish Mulligan and Helena Alparone’s mom prepared the main dish while Janet and Michael Townley prepared meatballs, Linda Persichino brought the salad, Beverly Howard the bread and butter, Tom Reedy the soft drinks, and Ivan Kosin and Paul Casey the desserts.

Everyone enjoyed spending a little time with the temporary residents at the Y, who expressed their appreciation with both a spontaneous prayer and by their applause.

After the residents and some staff were served, Club members sat down for dinner, too.

The Board of Directors has approved a recommendation to offer dinner 4 times a year.  The new schedule is March 19, June 18, September 17, and December 3rd.  Be ready for the next event - it was great fun!

For immediate release:

Plainfield, New Jersey.  Dr. Seuss’s birthday got an early boost today from the members of the Rotary Club of Plainfield North Plainfield.

To celebrate Dr. Seuss’s March 2nd birthday tomorrow, the Club held its weekly meeting at the Holy Cross Nursery School in North Plainfield.  Twelve Rotarians were present to hear fellow Rotarian Janice Allen, North Plainfield’s mayor and the director of the Holy Cross Nursery School, give a brief history of the school.

Janice has been a child care professional for twenty-six years, with twenty-four spent at Holy Cross’s school.  “It has been a wonderful career, working here with the children,” said Janice.  “I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing students from my early years now bringing their own children here for day care.”

Club members enjoyed a box lunch, and then spread out to read to groups of two or three children.  Dr. Seuss’s “The Cat in the Hat”, “And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, and “Green Eggs and Ham” were three of the favorites, among others.  Bright smiles and attentive looks could be seen at each table as Rotarians and children enjoyed the readings.

At one table, Police Chief Bill Parenti read earnestly to twin girls, who repeated each line back to him as he read.  At another, Tom Reedy, Executive Director of the United Family and Children’s Society, read “And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, another Seuss classic.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to share some time with the children and help instill in them a love of reading,” said Tom Reedy.  Executive director of the United Family and Children’s Society in Plainfield, Tom also read to the children last year.  “It’s fun for us as well as for the children.  We look forward to coming each year.”

ROTARY BLOOD DRIVE 2006

The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield, in cooperation with the Hartwyck at Cedar Brook Nursing Home, will sponsor a blood drive on February 1, 2006.

The drive will be held at the Hartwyck at Cedar Brook, 1340 Park Avenue, Plainfield, New Jersey, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

“These hours were chosen to give as many people as possible an opportunity to stop by and donate blood, including those coming home after work,” said Rotarian Robin Mathews, coordinator for the drive.  “Members of the Rotary Club will volunteer their time to assist with registrations and with refreshments.”

The drive will be conducted by the Blood Center of New Jersey.  If you are unable to donate at this time, check the Blood Center of New Jersey’s website (http://www.bloodnj.org/index.htm) for other drives in your area.

For more information, contact Robin Mathews at Solaris Health System.  Robin can be reached at 732-321-7000.

For immediate release:

Plainfield, New Jersey.  The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield and Solaris Health Systems conducted a blood drive recently and collected 24 pints of blood.  Held at the Hartwyck at Cedar Brook Nursing Home, the drive supported the Blood Center of New Jersey.

Club members and employees of Solaris participated in the event, and were supported by members of the Keystone Club at the Boys and Girls Club of Plainfield, who handled refreshments.

Blood drive coordinator Robin Mathews, an employee of Solaris and a Rotarian, was pleased with the turnout for her first effort.  “We definitely will run another drive here at Hartwyck’s community room,” said Robin.  “Several of our donors told me how much they appreciated the opportunity to give blood while enjoying the picturesque view of the Park.”
